In general, bad heart cramps in cases of angina pectoris are relieved by radical medicines, usually amyl nitrite or Trinitrin (nitroglycerin). There is, however, an old and exceedingly simple remedy which is quite easy to come by. It relieves the spasms without any side effects or complications. The same remedy is also good for asthma attacks. This old country remedy has been in use for centuries but has now, alas, been practically forgotten even in rural areas.

Here is what you do. Take some fermented cider, the older the better, heat it until it reaches boiling point and quickly remove it from the heat. Then soak some towels in the hot liquid and place them, as hot as the patient can bear, on both arms, covering each arm completely. The heat plus the fruit acids of the hot cider will decongest the heart circulation, soothe the blood vessels and the nervous system and relieve the cramps. The effect of this simple natural treatment can be reinforced by placing a hot linseed, hay flower or lemon balm compress over the heart at the same time. Linseed is the best choice for this purpose.

Cramp-like conditions brought about by angina pectoris or other similar causes follow the course of the sympathetic nerve. They often start in the pit of the stomach near the sternum and move up to the throat, leaving a feeling almost amounting to strangulation. Such distressing conditions, if treated as described, will be relieved to the patient’s greatest satisfaction.
